My Story

In May I am participating in Wipeout Dementia for the second time having competed and fundraised in May 2016 and judged the contest at the inaugural event in May 2015. Wipeout Dementia is a gruelling 4 week strength for surfing program which culminates in a Surf Off on the 27th of May in support of dementia research at the Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing (CHeBA).

Ambassadors for the event are legendary 1978 World Surfing Champion Wayne 'Rabbit' Bartholomew and Richard Grellman, former Chairman of ASP International, whose wife Suellen has advanced young onset Alzheimer's disease.

Projections show that there will be 1.1 million people in Australia with dementia by 2056, which means that 500 new nursing home beds for dementia patients are needed every month for the next 40 years to deal with that. The only way to change this is through critical research.

Please give generously to this worthy cause and help the researchers advance what they are doing at CHeBA to change the future of dementia.

Wipeout Dementia May 2017

Blob

One of the biggest global public health challenges in history is dementia.

Wipeout Dementia in May 2017 is a gruelling 4 week strength for surfing course starting on Saturday 6 May and ending in a 'Surf Off' on Saturday 27 May 2017. This fundraising campaign supports The Dementia Momentum, a Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing (CHeBA) initiative which seeks to bring researchers and the community together to change the future of dementia incidence.

Wipeout Dementia participants are from the corporate community supporting Richard Grellman AM, Spokesman for The Dementia Momentum. Richard's wife Suellen has advanced young onset Alzheimer's disease and has been in Residential Care since early 2014.

The Wipeout Dementia campaign started in 2015 and is held bi-annually in May and November. The successful campaigns have raised $350,000 for dementia research and generate widespread interest and support, with previous surfers including former Prime Minister Tony Abbott and former NSW Premier Mike Baird.

Wipeout Dementia Ambassador and former World Surfing Champion Wayne Rabbit Bartholomew AM encourages everyone to get on board this initiative by sponsoring those people participating in this challenging course who are aged up to 75 years. "This is a fantastic initiative to drive much needed funds to dementia research. With cardiovascular health in mid-life a key factor in brain health in late life, it's great to see this group taking on a challenging physical endeavour to support Richard's role with CHeBA. Richard Grellman has for the last 15 years been a mentor figure in my life. As Chairman of ASP International, Richard was a great asset, in fact instrumental, in the implementation of the "Dream Tour" concept, ushering in a new era of governance that set Professional Surfing on its ascendancy. Moreover, Richard and Suellen became close personal friends, our social and professional lives interacting on many levels, and I have witnessed the challenges, heartbreak, despair and resignation that the Grellman's journey has taken them on. I feel privileged to be alongside the great man once again."

The May 2017 Wipeout Dementia team has a lofty goal of raising $75,000 for the cause.
